How elected leaders come into the office and the decisions they make or fail to make, actions they take or fail to take and policies they adopt are some of the key drivers of how the entire body-politic in a country functions. This is particularly vital since it is the precursor to social, economic and indeed corporate governance. It sets the tone on how the government system functions, and how the private sector runs. In return, the board appointment processes and the independence of the directors sets the agenda that the corporate attunes to. Once appointed, the Board members must continuously keep abreast with the dynamics that affect the business, and consistently upgrade their skills to offer strategic direction in a manner that sustains the relevance of the institution they represent.
