CLIMATE SMART AGRICULTURE
The climate change impacts on agriculture, food security and food systems have been severe. The need for climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies in agriculture is more urgent today than ever before. Crop yield and production has been declining, threatening sustainable and profitable production of annual and perennial crops to meet food, feed, energy and fiber needs. Challenges in water availability is fueling conflicts between communities and requires fresh thinking in terms of management. Soil and water conservation, agriculture insurance, integrated soil fertility management as well as aspects of gender and climate action are important aspects. In an environment where rain-fed agriculture is becoming increasingly unreliable due to weather variability, what should stakeholders in the agriculture sector do to ensure their citizens are foods secure? What soil and water conservation techniques can be deployed? How do we plan for better use and higher productivity for land earmarked for agriculture? What crop management practices must we adopt to improve food security?
